Richard approaches the studio environment as an opportunity to take dancers technically as far as they can go. Because there is no choreography, the dancer can focus all of their energy on that 1/1200th of a second captured by the camera. The emphasis is on action, form, lighting, and frequently hair and costumes also take flight to dramatize the action.

Lighting is of great importance as it accentuates the body's musculature. Richard believes that dancers have more control of the body than any other athlete, and by utilizing lighting in various ways, he can accentuate that fact. This is why he enjoys the side lighting and silhouette work he has developed.

Another great joy in studio work is that actions can be repeated over and over until the most exacting technical perfection is achieved.
