The goal of Richard's Performance photography is to capture "Bursts of Beauty." After all of the training and rehearsal, it is in performance where the dancer explodes onstage with all of the spirit and technique they have acquired. These moments go by so fast within the flow of choreography that the individual watching has no chance to dwell on the beauty of a particular moment in time.

To capture these moments, Richard prefers to shoot rehearsals where he is free to be anywhere in the audience, wings, or even on the stage itself. During rehearsals, dancers also often repeat sections so there is more opportunity to catch something previously missed.

But there is more to performance than onstage. The backstage area has a life of its own, where dancers are preparing mentally as well as physically. Richard says, "What you see onstage is a performance. Backstage is a reality of inspiration the public never sees."
